Complaint No. 51-05-98202

Michigan Department of Community Health’s Bureau of Health Professions suspended Reginald D. Sharpe’s medical license after he abandoned a patient on March 1, 2005, who was in the middle of a third trimester abortion  (his staff assessed the fetus at 23.5 weeks gestation on or about Feb 24, 2005). When he left the building, the patient was over watched by two medical assistants (neither assistant was a licensed health professionals) Over the next few hours, the 31yr old woman began experiencing severe contractions and bleeding; she asked the assistants repeatedly to see the doctor because she required medical assistance. Each time she was told that the doctor would return shortly. The only assistance she was given during this time was help moving to another bed so they could change the bloody bedding.

As the intensity of the situation increased, the patient repeatedly asked the assistants to call an ambulance or let her mom come back and see her. They refused both requests initially, but finally allowed the patient’s mother back to see her; only after the mother, in the waiting room, over heard her daughter screaming for her. The patient was crying and bleeding when her mother entered the room. The mother soon observed the fetus crowning. After the medical assistants refused to help, the patient’s mother proceeded to deliver the dead baby by herself. She then asked the assistants to call for medical help, they also refused her request. The mother decided to call 911 on her own cell phone.

Oakland County EMS received the call at 1:23pm and arrived at the center at 1:31pm only to find the doors of the clinic locked. The paramedics waited outside for 8 minutes until a medical assistant finally opened the door and told them that their services would not be needed because Dr. Sharpe was on his way back to the clinic to attend to the patient. It wasn’t until the paramedics insisted to see her that they were allowed into the clinic.

Just before the EMS gained entry into the clinic, (deceased  baby was already born) Dr. Sharpe called and spoke to the patient’s mother on the phone and told her “what had just occurred was “normal” and that she shouldn’t worry, as he was only “five minutes away” from the center.” (Quoted from Order of Summary Suspension paragraph 14)

Dr. Sharpe also talked with the EMS over the phone and told them he was on his way to the clinic and demanded they not take the patient, but the patient wanted to be transported to the hospital, so the paramedics took her. After 1:55pm, more than 15 minutes after Dr. Sharpe told her he would be there in 5 minutes, the ambulance departed the clinic.

At the hospital she was stabilized, the placenta was delivered, and the deceased baby was assessed at 27 weeks gestation. Three weeks over the 24 week limit allowed to be aborted in a non-hospital clinic.

Less than 3 days later, Dr. Sharpe’s Woman’s Advisory Center caught on fire “accidentally” and all the records kept (evidence for a trial) were destroyed. He was never charged with abusing the law, and his license was only suspended for 3 months after this ordeal.

Please keep in mind that the women obtaining termination services are required to sign a document stating that they will not hold the clinic/doctors/staff responsible for injuries obtained during their care. Although this document will not stand in a court of law, if a woman experiences malpractice, many women assume that they do not have a right to take legal action nor have the monetary means to look into legal action.

Does any woman deserve to be treated like these women? Would you send someone you love to him for his services?

After receiving an abortion at Northland Family Planning (owned and operated by Renee Chelian) on Aug 11, 2000, the patient experienced fever, nausea, and intense cramping. Later found that Sharpe failed to remove the entire fetus. The decaying body tissues inside the woman’s uterus, led to an infectious inflammation which resulted in chronic kidney failure. She later had to undergo dialyses and a kidney transplant because of the harm the negligence caused her body.

26 yrs old woman obtained an abortion at Northland Family Planning West by Sharpe. She was told she had carried a normal intrauterine pregnancy.  Afterwards, she was experiencing pain and cramping. She was sent home and told to call him instead of going to an emergency room if the pain continued. Two days later, she ended up in the ER where a large amount of blood was found in her abdomen and pelvis after her undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy ruptured. Left untreated, her condition would have proved fatal. She experienced damage to her reproductive organs.

25 yr old wife (now in process of divorce) filed PPO on Sharpe after he repeatedly told her that we wanted to kill her. On one occasion, he told her that he wanted to strangle her like Tara Grant’s husband killed her.  He was also abusive to her daughter who is not his biological child.
